  • Scolecite is a member of the zeolite group.
    • Its chemical composition is Ca(Si3Al2)O10 · 3H2O, has a MOHS scale hardness of 5 - 5½, and has a monoclinic crystal system.
  • Scolecite commonly occurs as acicular, or needle-like, and fibrous aggregations.
  • They are often found in cavities of volcanic basalt. Rarely will they appear in granites and gnesis.
  • It ranges from colorless, white, pink, salmon, green, to red.
  • India is the main supplier for scolecite.
  • Scolecite is difficult to distinguish from natrolite.
  • It is both pyro- and piezo-electric.
  • It's named after the Greek word skolex, meaning worm. This is referencing its borax beads that contain the mineral in some cases curls up like a worm from blowpipe flames.
